Version 0.5.0 Free to use. Yours to shape.

A new home
for your stories.

Bring Marginalia into your vault, make it your own, and help decide what comes next.

Download Marginalia.

Install directly in your Obsidian vault. You don’t need a Community directory listing.

Includes main.js, manifest.json and styles.css. No models or vault content.

  1. Download and unzip

Unzip the download to get the marginalia folder containing the three plugin files.

  2. Add it to your vault

Copy that folder into .obsidian/plugins/ inside your vault. Create the plugins folder if needed. If you use a custom configuration folder, use its plugins folder instead.

  3. Reload and enable

Restart Obsidian. In Settings → Community plugins, enable community plugins if prompted, then turn on Marginalia in your installed plugins. You do not need to use Browse or search the directory.

  4. Make it your workspace

Open Settings → Marginalia to choose your vault type and modules. Ollama is only needed for the Librarian.

Install from GitHub
  1. Open Marginalia’s GitHub releases and choose the version you want.
  2. Under Assets, download main.js, manifest.json and styles.css. Use the release assets, rather than GitHub’s Source code ZIP.
  3. Create a marginalia folder under your vault’s .obsidian/plugins/ directory (or your custom configuration folder’s plugins directory), and put all three files there.
  4. Restart Obsidian, then enable Marginalia under Settings → Community plugins.

To update, close Obsidian and replace only these three files with the files from the same release. Keep your existing data.json so your settings are preserved.

Step into a world
that’s ready to explore.

Download the Greek Demo: a complete Obsidian vault built around The Pomegranate Accord, an original mythology-inspired retelling.

Meet the cast, read a short comic, and follow Hermes across colored timeline lanes. Five walkthrough entries are pinned on Marginalia’s Home page, in the same feature order as this site.

Includes Marginalia v0.5.0, fresh settings, templates and local entry icons. No AI model required to explore.

A guided writing desk

  • 72 notes: linked characters, locations, lore, items and systems.
  • 20 events, 20 connected participants, two calendars and colored location groups.
  • Three comic scripts plus a separate practice script, with 10 pages and 10 panels.
  • Home walkthroughs for Your World, Script Studio, Timeline & Threads and Librarian.

Open the demo

  1. Unzip it into its own folder.
  2. In Obsidian, choose Open folder as vault and select Marginalia Greek Demo.
  3. Review Obsidian’s trust prompt and enable Marginalia if asked. If needed, reload Obsidian, then use Marginalia: Open Home.

Open this as a separate vault; don’t copy its settings over your own. The story dates are illustrative, and the vault labels its adaptation choices and development exercises. The optional Librarian needs your own local Ollama model.

A few practical answers.

Do I need to pay for AI?

Marginalia uses a local Ollama model, installed separately. The plugin does not require an AI subscription. Model availability, licenses and hardware needs depend on the model you choose. You can use the other tools with Librarian disabled.

Can I use my existing vault?

Yes. Configure the folders, entry types and templates for your vault. Start with a backup or a separate test vault so you can try the workflow before reorganizing existing work.

Is this made by Obsidian?

No. Marginalia is an independent community plugin and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Obsidian.
